"Metaverse" is used for many different things: 3D showrooms in the browser, branded worlds inside games such as Roblox and Fortnite, and AR try-on on phones. What they have in common is that they all need 3D models of products.

What it means in practice

  • 🛍️ 3D product viewers on your own website
  • 📱 AR "view in your room" on phones, for furniture, decor and other objects
  • 🎮 Branded experiences on game platforms such as Roblox or Fortnite, built with those platforms' own tools
  • 🎪 Virtual events with interactive products

What big brands have tried

Large brands have experimented in public: Nike opened Nikeland on Roblox, Gucci ran the Gucci Garden experience on Roblox, and IKEA lets customers place furniture in their room with AR. These projects had large budgets and dedicated teams. For most companies the practical first step is much smaller.

How to start without an enterprise budget

  1. Pick 5-10 products that are hard to judge from photos (size, shape, how they look in a room).
  2. Get 3D models: generate them from product photos with image-to-3D (10 credits per model), buy a ready-made model in the shop, or commission an artist when you need an exact replica.
  3. Show them on your site with a 3D viewer and an AR button. See the Shopify and WooCommerce guide.
  4. Measure on your own data: compare engagement, product questions and returns before and after.

Game-platform worlds are a separate project

Roblox, Fortnite and similar platforms have their own formats, polygon limits, review processes and editors, and need development work. Read each platform's current creator documentation before planning a budget.
